Baltimore Bridge Disaster & Supply Chain Continuity

  • On March 26, 2024, in the early morning hours, a large cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing an immediate collapse of the bridge and tragically resulting in 6 fatalities. This catastrophe has had a profound impact in Baltimore, particularly for the families of those who were lost, and has resonated globally. President Biden is scheduled to visit the site today to survey the area, meet with officials, and offer condolences to the families of the victims.

  • In the interim, several measures have been implemented to maintain the efficiency of supply chains while the port remains closed. Ocean carriers have rerouted from the Port of Baltimore, opting to transport cargo through Philadelphia, New York, and Norfolk instead. Both NSRR and CSX announced this week that they are establishing a rail lane from New York and New Jersey to Baltimore to facilitate the movement of cargo to its intended destination. Trucking cargo is also being considered as an alternative.

  • The US Army Corps of Engineers has announced plans to reopen the channel by the end of May. This channel serves as a conduit to the Port of Baltimore, and its reopening would likely enable the port to resume regular operations. The ongoing cleanup efforts include the opening of a limited access channel by the end of April opening approximately 280 feet of the channel for traffic.
