· Blank sailings or voided sailings have been increasing as congestion at key ports rises and carriers are pushing to recoup their sailing schedules. This is especially true on the west coast as there are an estimated 97 vessels waiting to dock in southern California. This large number of pending vessels means carriers are left with little to no opportunity to ensure an accurate timetable for necessary planning. Add to this compounding issue in the US, some Asian ports are being omitted as well from feeder service adding additional layers to this growing problem.
· Since the beginning of 2021 there was an average of 7.7 voided sailings weekly. This number has jumped to 13 blank sailing over the past few months as carriers are forced to drop service from congested ports. Even at times transporters have been forced to void planned shipments due to limited ship availability, because of extreme delays seen at gridlocked US locations.
· This problem is also not expected to resolve in the short term but instead expected to continue through 2022 at least through the first month. Some carriers have already issued notices of cancelation through January as others wait to make final decisions.
