California Oil Spill a result of Port Congestion?

· On October 2, 2021 an oil spill was found off the coast of Huntington Beach, California. As clean up began it was unclear what may have caused a leak of over 144,000 gallons of oil however it was noted from the initial response there were many anchored ships in the area.

· On Tuesday October 5, 2021 it was however in a press conference by the response team most were left with the conclusion that a ship’s anchor may have been to blame for the damaged pipeline and oil spill. The coast guard stated in this conference that it was found that 4,000 feet of the pipeline had been dragged with a 13-inch tear in the pipe. The CEO of Amplify energy Martyn Willsher added “That 4,000 feet of displacement of the pipeline — it has essentially been pulled like a bowstring that, at its widest point, is 105 feet away from where it was. It’s almost kind of a semicircle.”

· Willsher was directly asked if the damage was consistent with an anchor strike and although she advised I’m not here to speculate about the cause, but the pipeline that has been displaced is a 16-inch steel pipeline, half an inch thick, covered with an inch of concrete. For it to be moved 105 feet is … not common.”

· Although no confirmation was given if a vessel was located above the point of the displaced pipeline a review of what may have caused this will continue. Many ships are in this area and congestion at the Port of Los Angles currently has vessels anchored or in some cases even drifting waiting an average of over 10 days to berth.
