· It was announced recently that the Biden administration would help to fund the creating of a US based manufacturing for port cranes. This stemmed from concerns of possible cyber attacks that could come from the currently used Chinese manufactured cranes.
· This week however it was discovered that the House Committee on Homeland Security during a probe found cranes currently being used at US ports included communications equipment with no clear purpose. There was also no record of the installation of this equipment. This is raising many red flags at the concern these could be used for espionage.
· To address the growing concerns a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy Liu Pengyu provide a statement to CNN on the claims that these cranes are risk to security is “entirely paranoia”. Liu also stated “We firmly oppose the US overstretching the concept of national security and abusing national power to obstruct normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US”
