· Chassis shortages have been a major issue for many years in the US import process however as record volume surged in the last two years this issue has become a major headache and a cost to consignees. To combat some of these issues and push for quicker returns free time has been lowered for many shipments however this has not resolved the underlying lack of chassis availability.
· Many inland rail locations have started to ground containers at wheeled container yards in stacks to keep cargo moving during this time. However once there, a trucker owned chassis is needed to allow the container to be “cherry picked” out of the stack. Rail yards are now often charging $100 for this cherry-picking service, and some are even planning to increase this fee to $125 in July.
· Most notably Norfolk Southern (NS) has confirmed this fee is currently charged to 4 locations but will be increased to 14 locations on July 1, 2022. They also recently announced this fee would increase to $125.00 effective July 18, 2022 at all 14 locations.
