· The Whitehouse Administration has released a new plan to spend $20 billion to return the manufacturing of ship to shore cranes to the United States (US). This comes as there has been a growing concern about the potential of a cyber attack for the current Chinese manufactured cranes.
· This funding will allow a new US manufacturing plant to be created by crane manufacturer Paceco Corp., in a location that will be later determined. These changes come after hearings held in the House of Representatives in 2022 discussed the security risks of operating Chinese-made equipment. The concern stems from planted spyware and mounting cyberattacks on the US infrastructure. Christopher Wray testified at Congress last week that these attempts and cyber attacks are “at a scale greater than we’d seen before”.
· It is important to note that this funding will be released over the next 5 years, and it will be some time before we start to see this manufacturing begin in the US. Additionally, the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) cautioned use of software Logink due to its development by a Chinese government agency, as well as raised concern of cargo scanning equipment manufactured by Nuctech a Chinese state-controlled entity as there is an inability to screen for some types of radioactive material.
