· Maersk recently announced a plan to invest nearly $1.4 billon to produce a carbon neutral fleet. This would help limit emissions ahead for the carrier and hopefully have a positive impact for the world in the climate change crisis.
· The first order of up to twelve vessels that can ship approximately 16,000 TEU may have as many as 8 container ships ready by 2024. There is also a potential of an additional four added to this fleet by 2025. These vessels would be powered by carbon-neutral methane fuel. Maersk has also ordered 10,000 tons of the specialized fuel.
· This will help to address environmental restrictions implemented by the International Maritime Organization. Maersk has advised they hope to have a completely carbon-neutral fleet by 2030 and target zero emissions by 2050. At this time it is unclear how other carriers plan to address the impending emissions-reduction directive.
