· Cyberattacks have become a prevenient problem over the last several years throughout the world. And large-scale companies are often the intended target for these attacks to force large ransom payments and sometimes even steal information and content. Steamship lines and even freight forwarders are finding they are ideal targets of these attacks and recently Expeditors and Hapag-Lloyd have now joined a list of those directly impacted by this crime.
· Expeditors recently announced that they were a victim of a cyberattack that forced most of its online operations and air shipments to be shut down, while they worked to get the issue resolved. They have recently stated that although they have made meaningful progress to restoring operations that it may take weeks to have full operations restored.
· Hapag has also faced an attack when a duplicate website was found of the ocean carrier. It is speculated this site was an attempt to complete a spear-phishing attack by cyber criminals to gain confidential information. It is unclear currently if the duplicate website was successful in gaining information. With these continued attacks it has become increasingly important to be vigilant in not only our personal security but company security as well.
