· Georgia was recently awarded a $6.2 million by the department of transportation to complete upgrades to tracks from the Savannah port to Georgia’s first inland port. This award is part of the larger program awarding $368 million in grants to help invest in nationwide railroad improvement as part of the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement Program (CRISI)
· This is the largest investment or grant issued to date as part of the CRISI program and will help to upgrade 18 miles of rail allowing for faster and heavier trains to move to Cordele inland port. This inland port is located 200 miles from Savannah and is operated by the Cordele Intermodal Services.
· There are also plans in the works to open an northeast Georgia inland port to help further cargo options in the US.
