· A major contributing factor in the ongoing supply chain issues in the US has been the availability of chassis. Chassis are required for container cargo to be out gated by a truck and the limited amount available at the port and rail has added to the struggle of moving cargo in a timely manner and increased the pressure felt by truckers.
· There are several reasons why this stock has been low throughout the last year including US manufactures running into shortages of needed supplies for production as well as a limited employee force. Prior to 2021 most of chassis in the US Market were supplied by China Intermodal Marine Containers (CIMC) but due to increased tariffs and duties they were essentially pushed out of the finished chassis market. The circulating of chassis has also been an ongoing problem as it is taking longer to get empty containers returned to the port, and once returned they are not able to be flipped from the empty container as quickly as needed.
· With these ongoing issues plaguing the chassis reserve it is likely it will be the third quarter of 2022 before already placed orders of equipment are able to be fulfilled. To help keep cargo moving carriers, ports, and railroads are asking to help temporarily lift restrictions to allow chassis to be imported from CIMC until US production can meet the needs of the supply chain.
