US Looking to Update Labor Laws to Rein in Workers Actions

· Recently, the west coast of the US experienced a detrimental work slow down by the ILWU (International Longshore Workers Union) when contract negotiations reached a stalemate. And although an agreement has finally been reached, and work has resumed, a new revision to existing law has been introduced the senate to prevent future instances of supply chain disruptions by unions.

· This revision if ratified would update the National Labor Relations ACT (NLRA) to detail two types of unfair practices by maritime unions. This would in turn make them subject to civil damages from employers. The goal of this changes would be to ensure a reduction in slowdowns by stopping unfair labor practices that have in the past been seemingly encouraged by unions.

· The PLUS revision would stipulate an action of longshore employees to engage in labor slowdowns at any time deemed unfair and potentially hold the union civilly responsible for such actions. The PLUS revision would also make it punishable to disrupt any modernization attempts at the port that would impede economic activity.
