· Recently China has been experiencing a setback while trying to lower their carbon emissions and limiting their use of coal as a power source. The country began decrease the amount of imported coal to reach the goal of 15% reduced emersions.
· China worked to convert to more renewable energy sources including hydropower and wind generated power. Growth has been slower than expected with wind generated power and a severe drought has impacted the hydropower for the last year. Now that winter has forced additional usage throughout most of the country the power available is simply not enough. Despite this China has also announced they plan to drop carbon emissions by another 20% over the next 5 years.
· As a result of the energy demand blackouts were reported in large areas of the county. Chinese authorities ordered power cuts to many factories to preserve resources. In some areas restrictions for factories and residents were put forth, and some power has even been ordered off during the night. All of this will undoubtedly affect supply chains as factories without an energy source would be unable to full-fill production orders and will likely be unable to ship on schedule.
